US vaccination crisis: UK strain now in NY

Newsman:  While the US is struggling to fight against coronavirus through controlling new cases, the new & more contagious strain of coronavirus tha was first found in the United Kingdom, has now already been detected in upstate New York in an apparent case of community spread, the state’s Gov. Andrew Cuomo confirmed on Monday. New York City Mayor Bill de Blazio has urged for travel ban from United Kingdom. The overall scenarios on the Covid -19 cases in US are not as it suppose to be as expected. The US health care system could collapse doctors across US warned.

The U.S. reached 21 million cases on Tuesday night, just over four days since reporting 20 million cases and more 357,200 deaths Johns Hopkins data shows. The first case of COVID-19 in United States was reported 349 days ago on 1/21/2020. Yesterday, the country reported 229,055 new confirmed cases and 3,775 deaths according to the data as of January’5th, 2021.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, At least 4,836,469 people in the United States have received a dose of a Covid-19 vaccine which is far short of the goal federal officials set to administrate. The goal was set to give at least 20 million people their first shots of vaccine before the end of December.

The shortage of the health care worker due to the Covid-19 death and the logistics are key reasons to fail to reach the set goal as said by experts on related field. Some hospitals across the US started running out of health care workers months ago.

The federal government said Tuesday that it had delivered more than 17 million doses to states, territories and federal agencies. The shipments, which came after a record-setting race to develop, study and approve a vaccine, have marked a turning point in the pandemic at a time when deaths and cases continue to set records.

Federal health officials recently acknowledged that the vaccine rollout had had a slower-than-expected start and said they did not have a clear understanding as to why only a portion of the doses shipped across the nation had made it into arms. But every state was granted an amount of the vaccine roughly in proportion to its population.

Nationwide, 125,379 people were hospitalized with Covid-19 on Thursday, more than any other day of the pandemic, according to the Covid Tracking Project. The number of patients topped 125,000 on Friday as well, but dipped slightly Saturday to 123,639. The US has now remained above 100,000 hospitalizations for 34 straight days. And the results of holiday gatherings are now further fueling new waves of Covid-19, hospitalizations.

Dr. Brad Spellberg, chief medical officer at the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center, recently said,

“This is about total collapse of the health care system if we have another spike,” Spellberg said.

“And we, in the hospital, cannot stop that. We can only react to it. It is the public that has the power to put a stop to the spread of this virus by obeying the public health guidance that have been put out.”

California emergency officials said hospitals are treating an “unprecedented” number of Covid-19 patients, and “the internal oxygen delivery systems built into many older hospitals are being overtaxed by the volume of oxygen flow required to treat patients with respiratory issues that arise from Covid-19.”

In New York, the new UK strain of coronavirus case was found in Saratoga Springs, just over three hours north of New York City. It joins several other confirmed cases of the UK strain found in Colorado, California, and Florida.

The New York case was discovered in a symptomatic man in his 60’s who worked at a jewelry store. The man did not have a history of travel, which New York Gov.Cuomo said, “suggests that it’s in the community, it was community spread as opposed to having traveled to the UK.”
