A ‘bipartisan impeachment’ in senate?

Newsman:  Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated that he believes that impeaching President Donald Trump will make it easier to get rid of the President and Trumpism from the Republican Party, according to a source with knowledge of the matter. This new development could lead the senate to hold the impeachment trial against President Trump that can end the trump era before the Inauguration of newly elected President Joe Biden. “If Mitch is a yes, he’s done,” according to Senate GOP source who asked CNN to be anonymous.

The House is now in debating process to vote this afternoon on a single article of impeachment charging Trump with inciting an insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6. the house will conclude the Impeachment process today, the January 13th2020,by the evening and President Trump will be the first President in the US history to be impeached twice. Meanwhile, The House of Representatives already has passed a nonbinding measure Tuesday night calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove President Donald Trump from office. The resolution urges Pence to “convene and mobilize” the Cabinet to “declare what is obvious to a horrified nation” – that Trump is unable to serve as president. But Pence will not invoke the 25th Amendment, he told Pelosi in a Tuesday letter. The vice president praised House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other top congressional leaders for their leadership, but told them invoking the 25th Amendment would not be “in the best interest of our Nation or consistent with our Constitution.

Under the fourth section of the 25th Amendment, if the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet determine the president cannot fulfill their duties, then power is transferred to the vice president. The provision has never been used.

Democrats have sought to oust Trump after a pro-Trump riot stormed the Capitol last Wednesday, leaving at least five people dead. Democrats allege Trump incited the riot through his calls to overturn election results and are also pursuing his impeachment for “incitement of insurrection.”  Five republican members already have said that they will join the impeachment effort ,which is certain to passed in the democrats majority house of representative.

Many Republican senators are staying quiet about whether they’ll back conviction — a sign that they, too, could support conviction in an effort to rid Trump from their party. McConnell is also speaking with the President-elect about how the chamber should handle an impeachment trial against Trump.

Several GOP sources said on Tuesday that if McConnell supports conviction, Trump almost certainly will be convicted by 67 senators in the impeachment trial.

The relationship between the Senate majority leader and the President — the two most powerful men in the Republican Party — has essentially collapsed. A source familiar with the relationship between the two men told CNN that McConnell is furious with Trump. The source said McConnell “hates” Trump for what he did last week following the attacks on the Capitol that left at least five people dead including a Capitol Hill police officer.

Trump and McConnell still have not spoken since last Wednesday’s riot, a separate source familiar with the matter confirmed to CNN. Another source said the two men haven’t spoken since McConnell’s floor speech acknowledging Biden as President-elect in December. “If Mitch is a yes, he’s done,” said one Senate GOP source who asked not to be named.

President-elect Biden is not trying to stop the impeachment proceedings, but he is trying to keep them from consuming his agenda and overshadowing the early days of his presidency according to CNN. President elect Biden called McConnell on Monday to discuss the possibility of “bifurcation” — doing impeachment proceedings alongside confirming his nominees and approving a sweeping Covid relief package. Two men spoke frankly about a potential impeachment trial for Trump, people familiar with the call said, as both of them noted it would be far different from the trial they sat through in 1999 for then-President Bill Clinton.

McConnell told Biden that the Senate parliamentarian would have to rule whether the Senate could work on legislative business other than impeachment, people familiar with the call said, adding that McConnell did not offer his own view CNN reported.
