Newsman: Six people were shot, with one killed, Thursday afternoon at a cabinet-making business in Bryan, Texas, just outside of College Station. Bryan Police Department Chief Eric Buske said,One victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Four people were critically injured in the shooting at Kent Moore Cabinets and taken to St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital. Another person shot was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition. A seventh individual was taken to the hospital after suffering an asthma attack. Detectives are conducting witness interviews. The suspect is believed to be an employee of Kent Moore Cabinets.
Bryan police said they believe the suspect is in custody. The person in custody is an employee of the company. One person was later taken into custody in nearby Grimes County after a trooper was shot, Sheriff Donald Sowell told CNN, adding the incident may be connected to the industrial park shooting.
“That’s what we understand. We (are) right in the middle of all this,” Sowell said.
Bryan Police Chief Eric Buske said,”Four people were transported to St. Joe Hospital in critical condition with gunshot injuries,” he said. “One other person was transported with no injuries — apparently it was an asthma attack — and one person was deceased at the scene.” “Police received a call around 2:30 p.m. (3:30 p.m. ET) of an active shooter at Kent Moore Cabinets.”
The FBI said in a statement it was “aware of the incident that occurred today in Bryan,” but the Bryan Police Department is leading the investigation. The Houston Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is also responding.
The suspect had fled the location when Bryan police arrived shortly after 2:30 p.m. local time. He was taken into custody in Grimes County, Sheriff Donald Sowell told ABC News.
The Texas shooting comes just hours after President Joe Biden announced a series of executive orders aimed at curbing gun violence. Biden’s executive actions, which are likely to face legal hurdles, are aimed at reducing mass shootings, suicides, and domestic violence.
“Gun violence in this country is an epidemic and it is an international embarrassment,” Biden said Thursday.
One of Biden’s orders would direct the Department of Justice to write rules that will reduce the proliferation of “ghost guns,” homemade firearms often made from parts bought online and that do not have traceable serial numbers.
Another order asks the DOJ to publish model “red flag” laws for states to use as guides, laws that allow family members or law enforcement agencies to petition state courts to temporarily block people from obtaining firearms if they present a danger to themselves or others.
The public is asked to stay away from the area.
