Newsman: Israel’s Consul General in New York, Asaf Zamir, resigned in response to Netanyahu’s decision to fire Gallant. Consul General Asaf Zamir – said his decision to resign should not be seen as a rejection of Israel or its people, but rather a move to join the fight for Israel’s future and democracy. Zamir says the Political situation in Israel has reached a critical point – as evident in the chaos there now.
In his resignation letter Asaf Zamir called Netanyahu’s move a “dangerous decision” which he posted on Twitter, and added that that he had “become increasingly concerned with the policies of the new government, and in particular, the judicial reform it is leading.”
“I believe that this reform undermines the very foundation of our democratic system and threatens the rule of law in our country,” he wrote.
Netanyahu’s opponents accuse him of weakening the judiciary to protect himself, as he is on trial over serious corruption allegations. Netanyahu denies all charges.
Netanyahu is on trial for charges of fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes in three separate affairs involving wealthy associates and powerful media moguls. He denies wrongdoing and dismisses critics who say he will try to seek an escape route from the charges through the legal overhaul.
