Newsman: A 20-year- old mother was fatally shot in the head while pushing her 3-month-old baby in a stroller on New York City’s Upper East Side on Wednesday night, police sources said. The baby was unharmed, police said.
The 20-year- old woman was shot to death by a man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Thursday, “We strongly believe it was not a random shooting,” adding, “We will catch the person responsible.”
Adams tweeted overnight, “More guns in our city means more lives lost. It means more babies crying as those who love them lie dead. We cannot allow this epidemic to keep claiming lives.”
Azsia Johnson was pushing a baby stroller on Lexington Avenue and East 95th Street around 8:25 p.m. when a man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt came up from behind and shot her in the head, police said.
An unknown person approached her and fired a single shot at close range, police said. The suspect fled immediately on foot, police said.
Before Azsia Johnson was shot, she texted a relative saying she was planning to meet her baby’s father “to work things out,” according to police sources, ABC news reports. Detectives are checking prior addresses in Brooklyn and Staten Island but believe Johnson was living at a women’s shelter in East Harlem.
Police want to talk to the baby’s father but have not named him as a suspect, report says.
No arrests have been made.
