Spain is the most dominant defensive team to win a World Cup; no champion before them had ever conceded only one goal en route to a title. And this Spain team did so with an extra game, as the new, expanded format of the tournament required its champion to play eight matches, a record.

Spain dominated possession all through the championship final and its defense shut out Argentina almost completely — Argentina recorded zero shots and only two touches in Spain’s box through halftime of extra time.  Leonardo messi Yet for the 90 minutes of regulation, Argentina’s defense held firm, with Spain’s crosses and attempts broken up by an Argentine shin or cleat or head, and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez seemingly always in position to stop any shots that got through. (Martínez finished the game with 11 saves, the most ever recorded in a men’s World Cup final.)

Then, in stoppage time came the pivotal moment, when a tackle by Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández on Spain’s young star Pau Cubarsí flipped the young defender into the air and hard onto the ground. That earned Fernández his second yellow card of the game, after he received his first for dissent when he publicly disagreed with the referee.

The two yellows combined for a red card, sending Fernández off the field and forcing Argentina to play the 30 minutes of extra time with only ten men.

After recording nearly a dozen shots on target, Spain finally broke through when forward Nico Williams took a cross into the box off his head, sending it back into the empty space in front of his teammate Ferran Torres, who knocked it in for the game’s only goal.

On Sunday, Argentina’s magic ran out as it attempted to become just the third country to win back-to-back men’s World Cup titles. “It really hurts in our soul not being able to take the trophy with us,” said Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni after the match.

Spain’s run to the title came through a wall of top-ten opponents: first a 1-0 win over No. 5 Portugal, then a 2-1 quarterfinal win over No. 9 Belgium, then a 2-0 win in the semifinal over No. 3 France, whose attack had looked unstoppable until then. Argentina had been the world’s No. 1 team; with the win, Spain has moved into the top spot.

Argentina’s Lionel Messi’s performance in this World Cup had been nothing short of unbelievable: His eight goals and four assists — including assists on both crucial late-game goals in the heart-stopping semifinal against England — was second only to France’s Kylian Mbappé in the race for the Golden Boot award. With the victory, Spain’s football program extended its global dominance. The Spanish women are ranked number 1 and are the defending Women’s World Cup champions. This is the first time a country has held both titles simultaneously.

At MetLife Stadium, where the get-in price for the game had reached five figures in the days leading up to the final, a crowd of 80,663 piled into the stands to watch the final. And they were treated to a World Cup first: a halftime show that lasted around 12 minutes, featuring Shakira, Burna Boy, BTS, Justin Bieber and Madonna.

The halftime show was a nod to American audiences and halftime spectacles like the Super Bowl, but it was controversial to many soccer fans: traditionally, halftime is 15 minutes. This one — between setup and music performances — lasted around 25 minutes. Sports fans have complained that it slows down the natural rhythm of the game; the more severe traditionalists say it’s part of the trend to Americanize the game (along with hydration breaks, which effectively create four quarters, similarly to an NFL or NBA game.)

The final day of a summer of World Cup fever in North America, the last of 104 matches in total, was a hot and sunny July day in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just across the Hudson River in Manhattan. On Sunday morning, fans — some in Messi jerseys and others draped in Spain flags — stood in line for bagels, sang on the subway and trains to the stadium, and packed into bars and watch parties, including a crowd of about 50,000 in Central Park.

Sunday in Met life stadium in New Jersey, it was only the winning side crowned on the final day of the month-long competition, but there were several other awards that were given out. Spain had a solid day, nearly sweeping the individual trophies along with their second World Cup title.

Golden Boot (most goals in the tournament)

For the first time in men’s or women’s World Cup history, there is a back-to-back Golden Boot winner.

Kylian Mbappé, France –  helped along by a two-goal performance in the third-place game against England on Saturday, July 18, was able to edge out Argentina’s Lionel Messi and win the honor of the World Cup’s leading goal scorer, netting 10 goals to Messi’s eight.

The two were neck-and-neck in both goals and assists at eight and four, respectively, heading into the weekend, but an offensive exhibition between England and France that ended in a 6-4 win for England ultimately proved to be the difference.

The Spain goalkeeper won the Golden Glove as the best goalkeeper at the 2026 World Cup on Sunday, July 19, capping a tournament during which he allowed one goal in eight matches and set records that had stood for decades.

La Roja won a World Cup title, its second in team history, $50 million, and championship rings. It also cleaned up in the individual awards, including the FIFA Young Player Award.

To be eligible for this year’s award, a player must have been less than 21 years old at the start of 2026. That made Spain’s Pau Cubarsí (19 years old) the perfect candidate to win. Cubarsi appeared in 8 matches for Spain.

The award is relatively innovative. It was first awarded in 2006 when Germany’s Lukas Podolski won the prize. Podolski was followed by some of the best players in his generation, Thomas Müller, Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappe and Enzo Fernández.

Spain’s World Cup champions head home for a royal welcome and a parade through Madrid

Spain’s World Cupwinning soccer team is set to return home on Monday, where the 26-man squad will be greeted by Spanish royalty and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez before boarding an open-top bus for a parade through central Madrid.

Throngs of fans will greet them as they travel from near Moncloa Palace, the prime minister’s official residence, to Cibeles Square.

A ceremony with the players will then be held at the square, where previous Spanish national teams and their supporters have traditionally gathered to celebrate.

Spain walked off with the trophy at Sunday’s final after defeating now-dethroned champion Argentina 1-0 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It was only the second time — after a 2010 victory in South Africa — that Spain won the title.

The Spanish capital erupted into celebrations after the final whistle, with thousands of supporters pouring into the streets from bars and restaurants, many draped in Spanish flags or wearing the team’s colors.

Crowds packed Madrid’s Puerta de Sol and other major squares — singing, dancing and setting off flares while car horns blared throughout the capital.

Many celebrated Sunday’s victory long into the wee hours of Monday morning.

The World Cup title, combined with the Women’s World Cup won by Spain in 2023, makes the European nation the first to hold both the men’s and women’s titles simultaneously.

A 35-year-old man was shot in the head, a 28-year-old man was hit in the shin and a 22-year-old woman was shot in the arm when shots rang out in the court in the back of 70 Lenox Ave. just before 10:30 p.m., authorities said.

All three victims were rushed to the hospital, where the 35-year-old was pronounced dead, officials reported. The 28-year-old and 22-year-old were expected to survive.

Kinu Rochford, 35, was shot and killed during a basketball tournament in Harlem, authorities said on Saturday. Rochford’s former school, Fairleigh Dickinson University, confirmed his role in a social media post.

 “FDU is devastated to hear of the tragic passing of former men’s basketball player Kinu Rochford (‘13),” read the social media post on Saturday. “A standout Knight and leader, Rochford built a legacy in Hackensack.”

Rochford was one of three people shot on the basketball court behind 70 Lenox Ave. in Harlem on Friday just before 10:30 p.m., police reported.

A 28-year-old man who was shot in the shin and a 22-year-old woman who was hit in the arm were also taken to the hospital and expected to survive.

What led up to the shooting remains under investigation. The identity of the man killed was also not immediately made known.

The organizer of the local tournament, known on social media as Kingdome Basketball, acknowledged “the tragic loss of life” during the opening game of the 2026 season.

“Our hearts are with the individual’s family, loved ones, teammates, and everyone affected by this devastating tragedy,” read a social post from Saturday. “The Kingdome Games were founded to unite our community through faith, fellowship, and sportsmanship. We unequivocally condemn all forms of violence and remain steadfast in our commitment to providing a safe and positive environment for our youth and community.”

Rochford was a Brooklyn native who began his college basketball career at the Globe Institute of Technology before transferring to FDU, according to the school’s athletics website. As an FDU Knight, he served as the team’s forward and appeared in 53 games, averaging 14.8 points per game, totaling 96 blocks and securing ten double-doubles.

He was recognized with the FDU George Braun Leadership Award in 2013 for displaying exemplary leadership skills among their peers, officials from the university say.

Rochford went on to play internationally for the Netherlands, France, England, Switzerland, Iceland and Lithuania.

“Our hearts are heavier today hearing the tragic news,” said Director of Athletics Jason Young. “Those who knew Kinu described him as a fierce competitor with a big heart who made many positive contributions to the FDU community. Today is another reminder to value each other and every day that we have.”

France dominated much of the first half, preventing Morocco from even taking a shot until stoppage time at the end. France went to on the attack as expected.  In the fourth minute, striker Kylian Mbappé just missed putting Les Bleus up early with a shot that zipped by the left post. It was billed as a battle of the World Cup heavyweights, and it looked close for a half.

The best first-half opportunity for France came in the 25th minute. Mbappé was tackled near the Morocco goal and won a penalty kick.

The resulting video review took three minutes, frustrating Mbappé, who wanted to take the kick much sooner. When he eventually shot the penalty, Morocco’s keeper Yassine Bounou dove, low and to the right, easily saving the weak effort by Mbappé.

The French defense stymied Morocco, preventing their offense from getting into a rhythm on a 89 degrees hot, sunny day. At halftime, it was 0-0. France could do no better.

Morocco’s  government has made it a point to invest heavily in the Moroccan national team, even building a state-of-the-art facility and academy, 15 years ago, that experts say rivals France’s soccer training site to becoming a respected contender at the World Cup.

“The king of that country made a decision,” said Zayn Nabbi, host of the podcast On The Whistle, about African soccer. “They were gonna invest in football, and they were gonna use it as soft power. A host of stars are turning down the opportunity to play for European nations to play for Morocco.”

Consider 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, who was born in France to Moroccan parents, and was courted by the French national team, but ultimately chose Morocco. “Bouaddi is a symbol of a generational shift in which playing for national teams in Europe is no longer treated as the highest form of recognition,” wrote journalists Aomar Boum and Brahim El Guabli in the blog Africa is a Country.

But they were no match for French soccer, which attacked relentlessly in the second half: in the 60th minute came the first French goal. A sensational shot by Mbappé beyond the long stretch of Bounou. It was Mbappé’s eighth goal of this tournament, a record 12th in the knockout round, and his 20th goal in the World Cup.

Shortly thereafter, Moroccan player Issa Diop received a yellow card for tackling Mbappé, the first and only card of the game.

The French scoring continued six minutes later. Mbappé flicked a pass to Ousmane Dembélé, who darted through the Moroccan defense and made it 2-0. Mbappé was subbed out in the 77th minute with a slight limp (he sat on the bench with an ice pack on his right ankle).

Morocco did not give up the fight, creating several scoring opportunities late. But they could not find a way to get the ball into the net.

France now moves on to the semifinal next Tuesday against either Spain or Belgium, which are playing their quarterfinal match tomorrow in Inglewood, Calif.

The arrests were made following an investigation after Bergen County Communications notified NJSP of a bomb threat sent via text message.

Troopers identified the owner of the phone number that sent the message and determined that the individual’s vehicle was at the Meadowlands Sports Complex when the threat was made, police say.

The Jersey City Police Department later located and stopped the vehicle on Bergen Avenue. Police were granted consent to search the vehicle and the residence of Amar Ramkisson for explosive devices; however, none were found.

Police charged Ramkisson with terroristic threats and false public alarm. A second individual, Breanna Rampersad, was arrested and charged with hindering and tampering with evidence.

Ramkisson was lodged in the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing. Rampersad was released pending a future court date.

Speaking at an Oval Office event, Trump said he watched the July 1 match and thought the one-game red card suspension, which Balogun received for landing on an opposing player’s ankle, was “very unfair” and that the clash between Balogun and the opposing team’s player “wasn’t a foul.”

“So yes, I asked for a review by FIFA,” Trump said.

The president defended the call and was dismissive when asked by a reporter if the episode could lead other world leaders to do the same in the future.

“I think it’s terrible if they wouldn’t allow, you know, a top player, maybe the best, maybe among the best players on the team, to play,” Trump said. “I think it would have had a big stain. And I related just that feeling.”

“I didn’t tell him what to do. I can’t tell him what to do,” Trump said. “And I don’t believe he made the decision. I think it was a committee that made the decision, and they made the right decision.

President Donald Trump ask FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the controversial red card issued to U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team forward Folarin Balogun in the World Cup, calling the penalty “very unfair” and “horrible.”

“All I did, I asked for a review because I didn’t think it was a foul,” Trump told reporters on July 6 in the Oval Office, confirming that he “spoke to Gianni” about the matter last week.

“I saw the play, and I’m a person that loves sports and who was a good athlete. I understand sports really well. And that wasn’t a foul. That wasn’t even an infraction. That was two guys running full speed that happened to crash into each other,” the president said.

After the president’s intervention, FIFA on July 5 reversed Balogun’s red card and one-game suspension, a stunning move that cleared the way for the top United States goal scorer and striker to play in the July 6 U.S. match against Belgium in the round of 16.

Trump’s outreach to Infantino, who has built a close relationship with the American president, has drawn outrage from the Belgians, whose soccer federation was granted the right from FIFA to appeal the Balogun reversal hours before the match begins.

‘I didn’t tell him what do do,’ Trump says

Trump applauded FIFA for making a “really brilliant decision” to overturn a “horrible” call but denied that he told Infantino how to handle the situation. “I relayed just what I felt. I didn’t tell him what to do. I can’t tell him what to do,” Trump said.

“I had nothing to do with the decision,” he later added.

Trump and Infantino have cultivated close ties over the past year, with the president hosting the FIFA president multiple times at the White House and Infantino awarding Trump with FIFA’s inaugural Peace Prize.

Infantino confirmed receiving the phone call from Trump, saying in a statement after Trump’s remarks that he regularly discusses Word Cup matters with the president and also takes calls from other heads of states and government officials.

“During our conversation, I explained that there was an ongoing legal process involving FIFA’s independent judicial bodies and that the case would be decided in due course by the competent bodies,” Infantino said. “That is how FIFA’s system works, and it is a principle that I will always uphold.”

Balogun received the red card in the U.S. World Cup match against Bosnia-Herzegovina after his foot landed on an opponent’s ankle as both players went after the ball. The penalty was widely criticized as a misapplication of a red card and too punitive for the actions on the field.

“It’s one thing to suspend somebody for the game, but how do you penalize them for a game that hasn’t been played yet?” Trump said. “It’s very unfair. You can’t do that. So, yes, I asked for a review by FIFA.”

FIFA cited the federation’s disciplinary rules in its initial statement on the highly unusual reversal and did not address Trump’s communication with Infantino. FIFA’s regulations state, “The judicial body may decide to fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure.” The player is then subject to a probationary period in which that suspension is revoked.

Infantino said the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, which made the call to Balogun’s red card, operates autonomously and with independence “essential to the credibility and integrity of football.”

“I read the decisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee when they are issued. Sometimes I am surprised by them. Sometimes I agree with them, and sometimes I disagree,” Infantino said. “What I always do, however, is respect those decisions and the autonomy of the bodies that make them.”

In a statement on Monday, Infantino said he “regularly” talks with Trump about matters related to FIFA World Cup — and said he spoke to the president about Balogun’s red card.

Recalling conversations with James in the Lakers’ locker room, Woike said the four-time NBA MVP has likely embraced the idea that his next team will possibly need him as a complementary piece rather than the face of the franchise.

“He’s really a chameleon,” Woike said. “He is such an all-around talent that he’s able to identify what a team needs, and he can mostly go and do it still, even here into his 40s.”

Woike said he believes James is looking to join an established contender where he can continue playing meaningful basketball without carrying the same responsibilities he has for much of his career.

“I think Cleveland and Golden State Warriors are probably the most logical places,” Woike said.

Fifty-three years is a long travel, from the legendary Forum in Inglewood back in 1973 to the Frost Bank Arena in San Antonio on Saturday night. The one tether, the one constant, across two landmark moments in New York City history was the Knicks’ blue away uniforms, with orange and white trim.

Fifty-three years ago, the series ended with an outlet pass to Wilt Chamberlain, who slammed home a dunk that meant more to him personally than it meant to the series—it was his final basket scored in an NBA game. On Saturday, the buzzer sounded shortly after Victor Wembanyama clanked a 3-pointer off the backboard.

But it wasn’t Wemby’s time. The Knicks made damn sure of that, amid one of the greatest playoff runs the NBA has ever seen. The Knicks are now only the third team in the league’s best-of-seven era—which started in 2003—to win a championship with three or fewer losses across their entire run. They are tied with the 2023-24 Celtics for the ninth-best postseason win percentage of all time. Only the 2016-17 Warriors have won more consecutive playoff games. The list goes on: The best postseason net rating of any team since Michael Jordan’s Bulls. The greatest comeback victory in Finals history, capped off with a game-winning tip-in by OG Anunoby that has already been etched into eternity. And, most importantly, an all-time night from Jalen Brunson, the 2026 Finals MVP, who stands alongside Jordan with the most points in a championship-clinching performance on the road with 45.

That vision begins and ends with Brunson’s individual brilliance. There is poetry in Brunson being the Knicks’ savior. He was never the prince that was promised, but he’d internalized that raw electricity of Knicks fandom at a young age. He grew up in those Madison Square Garden locker rooms. He saw his dad among the dozen other worn-down bodies on the last Knicks team to make it to the Finals. He saw how much the city wanted it then, never mind how desperate it’d become in the 27 years since.

This is forever. This was the most-watched NBA Finals since Jordan’s last run with the Bulls—a gold mine for the attention economy and those with the means to profit off an undeniable cultural moment. Alvarado—who was raised in an affordable housing co-op in Williamsburg that was the most ethnically diverse apartment building in the country—crash-landing into former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg (whose net worth exceeds $100 billion) in Game 3 is the kind of metaphor that could take years to fully unpack. Fans were priced out of game tickets, fenced out of watch parties, and forced to endure the scourge of celebrity, commodity, and privilege engulfing the basketball of it all. But then Brunson, in the biggest game of his life, delivered a timeless masterpiece to snap it all back into focus. Brown, 56, is an NBA lifer. After graduating from San Diego in 1992, he joined the Denver Nuggets as a video coordinator and scout, and Bernie Bickerstaff hired him as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards in 1997. 

“Pop is iconic, especially here in San Antonio,” Brown said. “When you talk about the game of basketball, he’s iconic to everybody that enjoys the game of basketball. The neat part about him is, it’s not just about the Xs and Os that you learn, you know you can never be him, but you learn people skills, you learn how to connect, not just the 15 or 18 players, you learn how to connect an entire city, maybe even an entire state.”

Of Kerr, Brown said, “My time as an assistant under Steve, that was fantastic for a lot of reasons, not just professionally, but personally, too. I had an absolute great time being an assistant coach in San Francisco under Steve, with those players.”

A substituted player must exit the field within 10 seconds. If there’s a delay, the team plays a man down for at least one minute before the replacement can enter the field.

There are now five-second countdowns for goal kicks and throw-ins. The team ahead at the end of a game is often slow to put the ball back in play. If a goalkeeper or defending player takes too long on a goal kick, the referee could award a corner kick to the other team. Likewise, if a player deliberately delays a throw-in, the opposing team could be given the throw-in instead.

The chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, Pierluigi Collina, has long focused on time-wasting during games. At the last World Cup, four years ago in Qatar, he ensured that stoppage time was properly added during the competition. Some 90-minute matches saw as much as a half hour of added time.

VAR, the video assistant referee, will have more opportunities to review calls during the game. These include the proper awarding of corner kicks, analysis to determine whether a player was in an offside position and a review of a second yellow card resulting in the send-off of a player.

There’s another technological improvement that viewers will notice at this World Cup: Officials will wear an eye-level video headset, so fans can see a replay of the action as the referee saw it during key decisions.

“It’s not just the Knicks, it’s the Knicks-plus, what a year,” said New York Governor Kathy Hochul at a press conference Thursday, where she encouraged tourists to visit the city despite the crush of high-profile events. “We can handle this, we got this, this is what we do best.”

The Knicks will host the Spurs at Madison Square Garden on June 8 and 10, and, if needed, will play here again on June 16. The first of eight matches at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. will be on June 13, when Brazil faces Morocco.

On Thursday, Hochul and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani laid out a complicated matrix of steps, many implemented by the Metropolitan Transit Authority, designed to help handle up to a hundred thousand extra mass transit riders on game days. “We [normally] handle 6 million riders a day, so this is something within our control,” Hochul said.

“You’ll see more of a police presence, but know that behind the scenes our cyber-analysts and experts are focused on this with every fiber of their being,” Hochul said, noting that crime on NYC’s subway system is at a 16-year low.

“We know how to put on big events,” Mamdani said, though he acknowledged increased road congestion on game days is inevitable. “I want to encourage New Yorkers traveling into Midtown [Manhattan] to park their cars at home. Ride a bike, take the subway, or walk.”

The list of game- and match-day changes includes expanded bus and subway service, as well as lane closures aimed at creating travel corridors that allow buses and emergency vehicles to run more smoothly. There will also be bans on construction and deliveries in some areas of the city to keep traffic flowing.

“This is a moment we’ve been preparing for, we’ve been hoping for and we feel fully prepared for,” Mamdani said.

“We are prepared for everything from high heat to flash floods to increased traffic,” the Mayor added.

The World Cup championship match will be played at the New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19.

At the press conference, state and local officials also detailed security arrangements designed to reduce the risk of crime and terrorism.

Officials say they’ll be ready if there’s an NBA Finals game in Manhattan on June 16, the same day of the World Cup match between France and Senegal at the New Jersey stadium.
