The nation’s largest school district said it will return next week with a sweeping ban on AI for grades 2-K-8th grade, which is the city’s pre-schoolers through middle schoolers, report said..

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani told ABC News in a statement that the city is implementing a moratorium on generative AI for these students and will spend the next year “studying the impacts of this technology.”

The news comes as some education advocates have pushed for guardrails and formal guidance on AI use.

“Earth is soon going to exceed the safe temperature threshold agreed upon by the world in the 2015 Paris climate accord because of warming from the burning of coal, oil and gas,” according to report issued on Wednesday by the United Nations Environment Program. The report, a first-of-its-kind

warns of “tipping points” with irreversible and cascading effects, including the loss of the West Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, the loss of the Amazon rain forest and the shutdown of the Atlantic Ocean circulation system that keeps much of Europe warm.

Wednesday’s report admitted that the world will cross the 1.5 threshold “in the next few years.” Despite experts saying there’s no way to limit warming to 1.5 degrees, U.N. officials long maintained the 1.5 window was still open.

“Some locations might become more or less uninsurable or even uninhabitable,” the report said.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said “Humanity is speeding past the limit to avoid climate catastrophe.” UN ordered its climate science arm to study different warming limits after the Paris climate accord. A goal of 1.5 Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) above mid-19th century temperatures became generally accepted after the scientists found dramatic impacts that affect people and the planet at 2 degrees Celsius (3.8 degrees Fahrenheit) but not at 1.5 degrees.

Instead of giving up, scientists and U.N. officials recommend trying to limit excessive warming and then bring the temperature back down to the agreed-upon threshold. But it still will mean decades of increased weather-related disasters, rising seas, extinctions and melting ice and glaciers, according to the report.

After a period of over-the-limit warming, the new strategy envisions getting back below the limit by ending fossil fuel use and developing some kind of way to suck industries’ carbon dioxide out of the air.

The world is now at 1.4 C (2.5 F) above pre-industrial levels, some scientists have calculated. The measure is based on a 20-year average, rather than a single year’s temperatures.

The report said the most optimistic scenario has warming peaking at 1.8 C (3.2 F) around mid-century if countries pursue ambitious climate goals, but that governments’ current policies should push temperatures to 2.6 C (4.7 F) above pre-industrial levels by 2100.

Therefore,instead of preventing warming of 1.5 degrees, now the U.N. said it wants policymakers to “prepare for and navigate a future” in which the globe crosses that limit and then corrects course and cools temperatures.

The report envisions that global temperatures will pass 1.5 “within the next few years,” follow a hump-shaped path of more warming, peak, then gradually cool to below the 1.5 mark, ideally by the end of the century. The report and experts call it “overshoot.”

“If we act now we can limit overshoot,” the report said, “Not a safe world but safer than remaining above” 1.5 degrees for the long term.”

During this overshoot period, more people will die or get sick because of the worsening climate change and its extreme weather, the report said. Food production will drop, people will go hungry, water shortages will worsen, economies will be hurt and species like coral will go extinct according to  the report said.

The UN Environment Program  said the traditional approach of this is planting more trees, but it says planting trees could, at most, shave a tenth of a degree off global temperatures. So the authors said more novel carbon removal approaches will be needed. The last phase in overshoot is cooling the planet by removing carbon dioxide from the air and storing it somewhere.

A year later, Egypt signed agreements with China to collaborate on its Belt and Road Initiative, a signature policy of President  Xi’s that seeks to build power and transportation infrastructure around the world.

In 2023, Beijing brokered a deal to reestablish diplomatic ties between Iran — its most important regional ally and oil supplier — and Saudi Arabia, a longtime U.S. ally. The agreement showcased China’s aspirations to compete with the United States for influence in the Mideast.

China has invested more than $10 billion in Egypt, building a business hub east of the capital, Cairo, and an electric rail line for industry in the Nile Delta. Annual trade between the two countries is estimated at $20 billion, according to government figures.

Beijing says its trade with Iran has always abided by international law.

Trade between the U.S. and Egypt was $15.7 billion in 2025. Egypt is a crucial partner in U.S. national security priorities in the region, and the countries’ leaders enjoy close ties.

Xi is visiting Cairo after attending a two-day conference of the 10-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a political and security group billed as a counterweight to U.S. global influence. The leaders of Russia, India, Pakistan and Iran attended the conference in Kyrgyzstan’s capital, Bishkek.

According to the Associated Press, its journalists watched the Lincoln, which is carrying about 5,000 service members, as it made its way into the Laem Chabang port in Chonburi province shortly after the destroyer USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. sailed past the area.

The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok confirmed the ship’s arrival in a statement Wednesday. It said the Lincoln’s strike group arrived in Laem Chabang, while the destroyer USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. docked at the nearby port of Sriracha, and the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls is in Map Ta Phut in neighboring Rayong province.

The visit marked the Lincoln’s first full port stop after 286 days at sea from the start of the deployment in 2025, the statement said.

“Abraham Lincoln’s visit to Laem Chabang is a clear demonstration of our enduring commitment to our allies and partners in Thailand, and we are all very excited to make Thailand the first port visit on our historic deployment,” Capt. Dan Keeler, Abraham Lincoln’s commanding officer, said in the statement.

Many of the service members are expected to make a visit to Pattaya, a nearby popular beach town. Thai officials have said the Lincoln’s stop would be for rest and recovery before returning to its U.S. base.

Pattaya officials said they welcomed the visit and the potential boost to the local economy. Authorities said they are stepping up security to ensure a smooth visit.

The ship had been supporting the U.S. war against Iran. Its deployment included a record-setting uninterrupted time at sea of more than 250 days. Concerns have grown about the Lincoln’s lengthy deployment following reports of deteriorating mental health among the crew and shortages of supplies including food and hygiene products.

The towers are where Legionella bacteria, which cause the disease, form. Legionnaires’ disease is contracted when the bacteria are breathed in, typically through water vapor produced by buildings’ cooling towers.

The City will add a map feature to the city’s cooling tower lookup tool, which is already accessible online here. And explore faster and newer testing approaches; assign the earliest dates possible for hearings on penalties for buildings that violate rules requiring monthly testing for Legionnella, Mayor said.

The new measures were met with general approval by members of the Harlem’ Legionnaire’s Coalition. However, said the organization’s founder, one thing has to be emphasized if any of the new steps are going to be effective.

“How will we enforce things?” Smith asked. “What are the regulatory adherence issues that need to be taken care of?”

She pointed out that the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene admitted earlier this summer to only having about two-thirds of the number of inspectors they needed to fully enforce rules for inspecting buildings’ cooling towers.

Without a full inspection force, Smith said, “It can be akin to busywork.”

Erin Piacenti is the Vice President of Business Selection and Conflicts, who was killed in a knife attack in Times Square on Monday, A spokesperson for Bank of America confirmed to PIX11 News on Wednesday.

The victims were stabbed within 20 seconds of each near 41st Street and Seventh Avenue, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

The 68-year-old from Rhode Island had just exited the subway and was waiting to cross the street with his wife when the suspect pulled two knives from a bag, waved them and then allegedly stabbed him in the abdomen “in what appears to be a random and unprovoked attack,” Police commissioner Tisch said at a press briefing.

The suspect then went up Seventh Avenue toward 42nd Street, where she approached the second victim, who was similarly stabbed in the abdomen in an apparently random, unprovoked attack, Tisch said.

The suspect allegedly then fled north toward the NYPD substation, authorities said. Witnesses flagged down officers who confronted her for four minutes and “gave her numerous commands to drop the knife,” which she refused, Tisch said.

“During the encounter, she told the officers, ‘I’m not dropping anything. I would rather kill both of you.’ She repeated, ‘I will kill you,'” Commissioner Tisch said.

Officers deployed Tasers before two officers discharged their service weapons, Tisch said.

The suspect, identified by police as 49-year-old Pamela Cisneros of Queens, was pronounced dead at a hospital. She had a “documented mental health history,” Tisch said.

Police officials stressed the woman appears emotionally disturbed and the incident is not terror-related. The NYPD will conduct an internal investigation and body-worn camera footage will be released to the public, the mayor said.

Two knives were recovered from the scene. The NYPD also released a photo of the recovered weapons.

“I want to thank the NYPD officers who stepped in and prevented a horrific attack from becoming even worse,” NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during the press briefing. “This is what the men and women of this department do every single day to keep our city safe.”

The operation, called “Operation Rotten Apple,” ran from late July through late August and targeted individuals across New York State, according to federal officials at the news conference.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullin held the news conference in New York on Tuesday where the  ICE Field Office Director Genalo emphasized that even though the arrests may not all be the “worst of the worst,” they all represent people who “choose to take a shortcut,” rather than use legal immigration means.  

 “It was precise, it was effective,” he said. “Make no mistake, this is personal for me.”

“These arrests included gang members, rapists, murderers, and child predators, which I believe there is a special place in hell for those individuals,” Mullin said. They claim all 2,100 were criminals.

Mullin said criminal history is not a determining factor in enforcement actions involving people who are in the country illegally.

“If you are here illegally, regardless of your status, if you are a convicted criminal or not, you are still in this country illegally, and it is our job to hunt you down and to deport you,” he said.

New York Governor Cathy Hochul challenged the characterization of those taken into custody and questioned whether federal authorities were continuing to target serious offenders.

“It seems like in the last year and a half, you would have already moved the worst of the worst and the baddest of the bad. And now, to make your quotas, you’re going after innocent people. People who are not committing crimes,” Hochul said.

Hochul, meanwhile, said she is seeking $87 million in federal funding designated for police enforcement and counterterrorism efforts.

“Over the last three years, the teams that use these funds have been responsible for 145 major arrests, disruptions and leads across 10 states. You know what that translates into? Lives saved,” Hochul said.

DHS secretary Mullin argued that New York City’s and New York state’s sanctuary provisions make federal enforcement efforts more difficult and more dangerous because of what he described as a lack of cooperation between federal agents and local police. He said that position is one reason he does not believe New York should receive federal funding.

In the past, many New York judges have issued decisions to the contrary, allowing the release of people arrested by ICE with protective status or applying for asylum. ICE’s own data shows that only about 31% of people in ICE detention have been convicted of a crime.

Since then, community organizations have said ICE has surged enforcement in many neighborhoods, including across Queens and Brooklyn.

Hochul reacted to Mullin’s address Tuesday saying,

“There’s no way that that number constitutes people who committed crimes [in a] way that we consider a crime in New York State. They consider anyone who crossed the border a criminal,” Hochul said. “So don’t fall for that.”

Russia insists that ending the war in Ukraine can only be done on its own terms, something Kyiv has continually rejected. Meanwhile, attacks on Ukraine have intensified in recent days, along with rumors that Moscow is set to mobilize hundreds of thousands of fresh troops and step up ground offensives.

Ukraine has also scaled up its drone strikes, attacking energy infrastructure within Russia, as well as the warehouses of online retailers Wildberries and Ozon.

India is one of the biggest buyers of Russian oil and has also recently stepped up to provide gasoline to Moscow following Ukraine’s attacks on its refineries.

India’s purchases of Russian oil have brought it into conflict with U.S. President Donald Trump, who scrapped a trade deal over the issue in 2025.

“Focus areas for Russia-India friendship remain energy, innovation, space, fertilizers and people-to-people linkages,” Modi said during the meeting.

Putin is expected to attend the BRICS summit in Delhi on Sept. 12 and 13. Modi is expected to meet EU leaders in December.

Speaking exclusively with Paul Ronzheimer of the Axel Springer Global Reporters Network, when asked whether Russia could resort to nuclear weapons, Stubb responded that Beijing provides a powerful brake on Moscow escalating its war in Ukraine.
“I had the foreign minister of China visiting me this summer, and I raised the issue,” Stubb said. “And he said, we will never allow it to happen. And I think that’s a pretty good deterrence.”
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Stubb in Helsinki on July 5, with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and European security among the issues discussed. China remains one of Moscow’s most important economic and diplomatic partners.
Alexander Stubb also argued that Moscow benefits from keeping Europeans fixated on the prospect of nuclear escalation or a direct attack on NATO.
“Russia wants us Europeans to sit here and discuss: Will Russia escalate? Will Russia use nuclear weapons? Will Russia attack NATO and Europe?” the Finnish President told.
His recommendation was characteristically restrained: “Stay calm, stay cool, stay collected, stay vigilant. Don’t dramatize, prepare for the worst in order to avoid it.”
In May, after a drone entered Finnish airspace near Helsinki and fighter jets were deployed, Stubb insisted Finland was “not facing any direct military threat.”
In the interview, he played down fears of an imminent Russian assault on NATO, describing Moscow’s attempts to probe the alliance as “more like teasing” than preparation for war. Russia’s troops remain tied down in Ukraine, he told, while NATO’s deterrence makes a direct attack highly unlikely.
President Stubb also argued that Europe is approaching the point when it should reopen direct political dialogue with Moscow — a notable call from the president of a country that shares a 1,340-kilometer border with Russia and joined NATO after Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
“I’m sure we are approaching the day when it would be useful for Europeans to be in more direct contact with Russia,” he said, “especially because we need to avoid misunderstanding.”
Europe is “not there yet,” Finish leader Stubb stressed, with the immediate priority remaining support for Ukraine.

Trump, in a Truth Social post on the morning of Aug. 31, said Iran is “officially a Failed Nation.”

“IT IS DEAD! They have no Navy, they have no Air Force, they have no currency, they are not paying their soldiers or police, Inflation is at 300%, and their leadership is in total disarray and incapable of properly representing the country,” Trump wrote.

Reporter Trey Yingst told Fox news that President Trump vowed a U.S. response to Iran’s retaliatory strikes that were intercepted in Jordan.

“We’re going to hit them hard,” Trump told Fox News on Aug. 31, according to reporter Trey Yingst, who spoke to the president over phone. “There will be a response,” Trump said.

Hours after the attacks resumed, Trump posted an AI-generated video on Truth Social depicting depicting Kharg Island, an Iranian oil export hub, under attack from missiles and engulfed in flames. There is no evidence such an attack took place.  An Iranian official, speaking to Reuters, dismissed Trump’s post as “laughable.”

Two people were killed and others were injured in the attack on Larak Island, Iran state media reported. No injuries were reported at either U.S. base from the intercepted strikes in Jordan.

Tim Hawkins, U.S. Central Command spokesperson, said in a statement the U.S. attacks on Lark Island came after IRGC forces were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz and that two launchers were struck.

The Trump administration last week announced new economic sanctions on countries that supported Iran in an effort called “Operation Economic Outcast.”
